Sunset Coast Walking Trails

Famous for its coastline, the Sunset Coast also rewards walkers well beyond the beach. Explore a mix of coastal paths over limestone headlands and inland walk trails through nature reserves, lakes and national parks. From relaxed foreshore strolls to half-day hikes with lookouts and birdlife, there’s a trail to suit every pace and interest.

Sunset Coastal Path

This foreshore route is part of Perth's coastal shared-path network, linking Burns Beach to Mindarie with a recently completed 3.57 km dual-use path that enables continuous walking and cycling along Perth's northern coastline. The segment between Trigg Beach and Hillarys Boat Harbour is well documented as a dual-use shared path offering sweeping coastal views, and is regarded as part of the broader Sunset Coast Tourist Drive walk experience.

Lake Gwelup Story Trail

Discover a unique blend of storytelling and nature on the Lake Gwelup Story Trail. This 2.4km kilometre loop trail offers an easy, family-friendly walk that takes around 90 minutes to complete at a relaxed pace. As you stroll along the scenic lakeside path, you'll encounter a series of vibrant story panels that unfold an enchanting tale inspired by local wildlife and culture. The trail is fully accessible, with flat, well-maintained paths suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

Yanchep National Park Ghost House Walk Trail

The Ghost House Walk Trail takes you on a journey to discover the natural and cultural history of the wilderness areas in Yanchep National Park, an hour north of Perth. Along the way you will encounter the sights and sounds of the pristine wetlands and discover the historic remains of the 'Ghost House'.

Herdsman Lake Walk Trails

Yange Kep Bidi (translation Wetland Trail) is a picturesque meander starting at Freshwater Bay on the Swan River foreshore. This 21km bird lovers walking trail connects remnant bushland and significant wetlands including Perry Lakes, Lake Monger and Herdsman Lake. Or, walk the 8 km Herdsman Loop and Olive Seymour Boardwalk trail and enjoy one of the best bird watching areas not far from Perth City. There are over 100 species of birds recorded at the lake, some of which have come from the other side of the world. To make things even better, take a detour and include the impressive Olive Seymour Boardwalk on your circuit.

Reabold Hill Summit Boardwalk

Located in Bold Park, Floreat, Reabold Hill is the highest natural point on the Swan Coastal Plain in the metro area and at 85m offers sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, Perth and beyond to the Darling Scarp. The elevated boardwalk immerses visitors in the bushland expereince with interpretive signs, seating, artwork and bird-life.

The Mosman Park Heritage Trail

The Mosman Park Heritage Trail explores some of the highlights of Mosman Park’s history and reveals the clues that have been left behind. The trail visits 16 sites on a walk that takes you along the river, through the bush and back into the heart of Mosman Park. Take time to explore the trail and don’t forget to take in the beautiful scenery of this unique municipality, between river and sea.

Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail

The Yaberoo Budjara Hertiage Trail is a 28 kilometre one-way trail in Wanneroo is based on the movement of Yellagonga and his people between Lake Joondalup and Yanchep. It can be completed in sections. It extends from Neil Hawkins Park in the south to Yanchep National Park in the north, traversing tuart and banksia woodland, coastal heath and former wetlands. It has red markers with a grasstree symbol and can be accessed in the following sections:

  • Neil Hawkin's Park to Hester Ave: This land was once part of a stock route. Lake Joondalup (meaning "the lake that glistens") is a large freshwater lake that was well known to the Aborigines as a favoured camping and hunting ground. On the eastern side of the trail paperbark and shoreline vegetation dominate, while on the western side tuart, marri and parrot bush are common. The trail enters Neerabup National Park via old quarry access roads. The top of the ridge provides views to the Indian Ocean.
  • Hester Ave to Romeo Road: The trail continues in Neerabup National Park through jarrah and sheoak. Then the vegetation changes from low banksia woodland to coastal limestone heath. From the top of the limestone ridge there are 360 degree views.
  • Romeo Road to Yanchep National Park: The trail continues close to Wanneroo Road and this area has been severely degraded by fire and weed invasion. Then it passes close to Pipidinny Swamp and enters Yanchep National Park. There is a large grove of tuarts to the west. Once in Yanchep National Park, the track meanders near Loch McNess, which was a traditional meeting, corroborree and ritual area.

Lake Joondalup Circuit

Explore the 16km Lake Joondalup Circuit in Yellagonga Regional Park, a scenic trail perfect for wildlife lovers. Starting at Neil Hawkins Park, the shared path winds through wetlands and reed beds, showcasing seasonal wildflowers and native flora. Along the way, spot kangaroos, turtles and waterbirds and enjoy panoramic lake views. The trail features boardwalks, playgrounds, picnic areas and an observation tower. Easily accessible by car, bike, or public transport from Perth, this nature-rich loop offers a peaceful escape and vibrant wildflower displays, making it ideal for families, walkers, and cyclists alike.

Lake Goollelal Loop

The Lake Goollelal Loop in Yellagonga Regional Parks south a family-friendly trail ideal for wildflower spotting. This shared path for walkers and cyclists winds through stands of tuart, jarrah, marri, and paperbark, offering seasonal wildflower displays and rich native vegetation. Along the way, explore historic sites like the Wesleyan Mission Farm and Luisinbi winery, and watch for wrens, waterfowl, turtles, and native water rats. With playgrounds, rest stops, and easy access via walking, cycling, or public transport, the loop provides a peaceful nature escape and a vibrant wildflower experience for all ages.
