Explore the Sunset Coast

Getting to Perth's beaches is easy, with most just a short drive from the city centre and the northern limits no more than an hour away. The Sunset Coast Tourist Drive is a must for anyone travelling by car or if you prefer to walk or cycle between beaches sealed paths edge many parts of the coastline. A duel-use walk and cycle path hugs the coast from Sorrento Beach to City Beach along the West Coast Drive.

Cottesloe Beach

Known for the sloping grass banks and towering Norfolk pines that back onto its pristine sand and the iconic architecture of the Indiana Teahouse, now home to stunning Indigo Oscar restaurant, Cottesloe Beach is one of the best beaches near Perth for an afternoon swim. Spread a blanket and enjoy a meal alfresco, taking in the sunset from the stunning grasslands. In March, Cottesloe hosts the annual Sculpture by the Sea, Perth's largest public outdoor art exhibition along the beachfront.

City Beach and Floreat Beach

Just fifteen minutes from central Perth, City Beach is a popular family-friendly beach in Perth. Two rock shelves create a gentle swimming area, making it ideal for less experienced swimmers. Enjoy fine dining at Odyssea City Beach, or for a more relaxed family outing, take advantage of the barbecue facilities and playgrounds at nearby Floreat Beach. A trip to Reabold Hill, the highest natural point along the coast, offers stunning views and photo opportunities of Perth's coastline.

Scarborough Beach and Trigg Beach

The lively Scarborough Beach precinct has transformed in recent years, now featuring one of Perth's most impressive skate parks, an outdoor bouldering space, and expansive grassed areas perfect for observing surfers and otherworldly sunsets. The Scarborough Sunset Markets run along the beachfront on Thursday nights during summer and Saturday afternoons in winter. Scarborough Beach is one of Perth's top beaches for watersports, while Trigg Beach beckons serious surfers with one of the best surf breaks near Perth. Follow the coastal path to Mettam's Pool, known as the best snorkeling spot in Perth, before visiting Karrinyup Shopping Centre, one of Perth's largest shopping destinations.

Hillarys Boat Harbour

Hillarys Boat Harbour is a top family attraction near Perth for those looking for a day packed with fun. Stay at Quality Resort Sorrento Beach or Nautica Residences Hillarys for waterfront accommodation with easy access to the precinct. Enjoy alfresco dining with marina views, shopping at boutique stores along the Hillarys Boardwalk, or relaxing at Hillarys Beach, which is popular with families for its playground and offshore pontoon. Don't miss AQWA (Aquarium of Western Australia), where you can learn more about Perth's marine life through interactive experiences like the Mettam's touch pool or the Shipwreck Coast aquarium tunnel. Visitors can also book whale watching tours from Hillarys Boat Harbour or head to Rottnest Island with Rottnest Fast Ferries.

Mindarie Marina and Yanchep

Stop by The Marina Mindarie, a stunning waterside dining and entertainment destination near Perth. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. Further north, Yanchep Beach and the nearby Moore River region offer endless activities for families and adventurers. Yanchep Lagoon is popular for snorkelling near Perth, while Yanchep National Park is home to koalas, kangaroos, and several hiking trails. You can also explore the Crystal Cave and learn about the region's cultural significance to the traditional Aboriginal custodians.

Two Rocks to Lancelin

The northern coastline between Two Rocks and Lancelin is known for its expansive sand dunes, making it a prime location for sandboarding, four-wheel driving, and water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing. It's also popular with anglers thanks to sheltered nooks and wrecks filled with fish. For a unique stargazing experience away from city lights, visit the Gravity Discovery Centre.
