City Beach is the embodiment of Perth's coastal lifestyle.
Residential suburbs splaying out up onto the stretches of white sandy shorelines, yet just a short distance away from the bustle of the city centre. The area has developed a thriving local community with plenty of activities, dining options, and beachside amenities. So here's our full guide to the City Beach experience.
How to Get There
City Beach is the closest beach to the city, located only 10 kms from the CBD, making it super easy to get to. If you're planning on driving, take the West Coast Highway – it's a scenic route with stunningly blue ocean views all along the way. Not to mention, plenty of parking near the beach, so you won’t have to stress about finding a spot. If public transport is your preferred, then hope on Bus Routes 81 & 82 out of Perth Busport will drop you off right by the beach.
What to Do
Hit the Beach, of course!
City Beach is famous for its clean, white sands and crystal-clear waters. Whether you want to swim, surf or sunbathe, the long stretch of beach is popular without being crowded. The beach backs onto soft grassed areas with shaded playgrounds where you'll often find families enjoying a picnic or barbecue.
Picnic at the park
If you're looking for a good spot for a picnic, City Beach has plenty of shady and well-maintained parks to choose from. Right by the beach is Jubilee Park, a large open lawn edged with trees, a playground and basketball court. If you're looking for a quieter option, further down Challenger Parade you'll find Challenger Park with access to a play area and is dog-friendly for off leash.
Go for a stroll
The Floreat Beach Nature Walk is a boardwalk connecting City Beach to neighbouring Floreat Beach. It's a lovely way to take a seaside stroll without getting any sand on your feet and offers one of the best views of the sunset over the ocean.
Play beach volleyball
At the northernmost end of the beach are dedicated Volleyball courts on the sand with fixed beams. It's free to use for the general public, just remember to bring your own nets and volleyballs or you can hire from Volleyball WA.
Check out Reabold Hill Summit Lookout
A short drive from the beach, Reabold Hill Summit Lookout offers breathtaking views of Perth's skyline, the coast, and there's a walkway through the lush surrounding bushland. It’s perfect for a quick hike, some fresh air, and a few Instagram-worthy photos.
The Quarry Amphitheatre
Keep an eye out for the regular events held at the Quarry Amphitheatre at Bold Park Reserve. The venue offers stunning panoramic views of the city skyline in a peaceful bush setting with tiers of soft grassy lawns to sit on. It's frequently used as an outdoor performance venue but you can also book it out for intimate outdoor functions.
Where to Eat
City Beach is home to some fantastic dining spots, each with its own unique vibe.
Odyssea City Beach
For an upscale dining experience, Odyssea City Beach offers spectacular views of the Indian Ocean as you dine. The restaurant features a modern-Australian menu with a focus on local produce and seasonality. It’s a favourite among locals and visitors, especially at sunset.
Clancy's Fish Bar
If you’re looking for a more casual beachside fare, Clancy’s Fish Bar is perfect. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and tasty seafood, it’s a great spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family while taking in the beach views. There's no better place to sink into a craft beer and seafood platter.
Hamptons City Beach Bar & Kitchen
Hamptons City Beach is great for all day round from breakfast to dinner. The bistro is expansive and has a relaxed atmosphere. Our favourite is their outdoor deck – perfect for when you're beelining for a coffee first thing after your morning swim, or sipping on craft cocktails into the sunset.
Voyage Kitchen
New to City Beach is Voyage Kitchen - previously located in Sorrento. Serving up plates designed to share for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as weekly pizza and pasta specials, it is the perfect spot for a family, couple or group to meet for a delicious meal overlooking the ocean.
