Spend the day in Perth Hills Armadale, chasing orchards bursting with blossoms, native wildflowers and hundreds of thousands of vibrant tulips. Every drive between stops reveals more blooms and bushland; getting there is just as enjoyable as the destination.

Just 40 minutes from the city centre, this spring fling is an easy day trip from Perth, yet the fresh air, winding roads and pretty country scenery make it feel like a real escape.

Here’s how to spend a spring day in Perth Hills Armadale:

Start early and be sure to wear comfy shoes. Even if the spring sunshine is out, bring a jumper or light jacket, as this time of year can still be a little chilly in the Perth Hills.

Set yourself up for a day of exploring with breakfast at Avocados Perth. Perched on the banks of the water-lily-filled Canning River, this is a pretty spot for - you guessed it - avocado on toast! Of course, there’s plenty of other brunch picks on the tasty menu – the big breakfast is epic. Plus, a table by the water is an idyllic spot to sip your morning coffee.

Next, head east up Brookton Highway. September is the time for spring blossom at Raeburn Orchards, which marks the beginning of another fruitful year. Pink and white petals soften the family-run working orchard, making it a beautiful spot for a wander amongst the neat rows of fruit trees. Take along an esky to stock up on fresh produce and local artisan goodies from the packing shed.

Time for a mid-morning coffee and muffin? Drop by The Cozi Corner Book Café, found close to Araluen Botanic Park. As the name suggests, this sweet café is indeed cosy and has plenty of places to curl up with a book from the second-hand bookstore. After a quick browse of the bookshelves, it will be impossible not to take home a new read.

An annual highlight is the ‘It’s Yates Springtime at Araluen Tulip Festival’ at Araluen Botanic Park. Prepare to be dazzled by over a quarter of a million tulips and other spring blooms - daffodils, hyacinths, lilies, iris and more. Held over about 6 weeks, from early September (weather dependent), the 96-year-old heritage garden beds are stacked with vivid carpets of blooms that have to be seen to be believed.

Each display is a discovery, as you explore winding paths, timber bridges, elevated boardwalks and flowing streams. Beyond the tulips, there are camellias, roses, pockets of natural bushland and the park’s historic buildings - all making for a very photogenic stroll. Check festival dates and be sure to book ahead – this beloved local event draws a big crowd for good reason.

After a wander amongst the blooms, tuck into a late lunch in the lush gardens of Naked Apple Cider House, just a 10-minute drive away. The family-friendly Karragullen spot is set amongst bushland and manicured grounds to explore after a good feed. Grab a table on the deck, or inside the cosy cottage and order something to share – though with dishes like crispy porchetta, seafood linguine and beef brisket tacos you may want to keep it all to yourself. Not sure what to drink? A tasting plank of ciders made from local apples and pears is the way to go.

You’ll want to walk off a hearty lunch on one of the many hiking trails across the Armadale Hills. Roley Pools and Bungendore Park are popular trail hubs, and in keeping with the spring theme, Armadale Settlers Common East is bursting with native colour in early spring.

This trail network holds plenty of walking options in the Bedfordale bushland – from wheelchair-friendly short trails, to 5km hikes and more. The gentler paved sections make this a great option for families, prams and anyone after a nature fix without tackling a demanding hike. Want to find the photo-worthy hollow tree? Take the accessible Jeeriji Trail to this enormous ancient gum, keeping your eyes peeled for wildflowers along the path.
