The historic town of York, Western Australia, is grabbing the spotlight in the award-nominated short film Don't Talk About the Monster on the Roof.

Set against the stunning landscapes of regional WA, this locally produced film has earned five prestigious nominations at the inaugural WA Made Film Festival's Student Award category, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.

Filmed as part of Curtin University's Screen Arts course, the short follows four friends embarking on a road trip through WA's iconic regions, only to be confronted by a terrifying presence. The film, directed by Christopher Paik-Swan, beautifully integrates the natural beauty of WA with advanced filmmaking techniques, including the use of Limitless Studios' LED wall for seamless virtual production.

York's picturesque rural charm, with its blend of heritage buildings and stunning countryside, plays a key role in the film's visual storytelling. Director of Photography James Hoare praised the town's mix of traditional and natural beauty, saying it perfectly complemented the film's suspenseful atmosphere.

This film highlights the cinematic potential of WA as a premier filming destination, drawing attention to the region's diverse landscapes and accessible locations that support both emerging and established filmmakers. Don't Talk About the Monster on the Roof further reinforces Western Australia's reputation as a global hub for film production.

Following it's screening as part of the 2025 WA Made Film Festival, it will soon be available online, offering global audiences a glimpse of the breathtaking landscapes that make WA a unique filming location.
