The City of Perth has earned the prestigious title of Tree City of the World for the second consecutive year, acknowledging its dedication to expanding and maintaining its urban forest in 2024.

The Tree Cities of the World program recognises cities that sustainably manage and protect urban forests, providing significant benefits to residents. Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds celebrated the award, highlighting the City's focus on nurturing a sustainable tree canopy in local parks and streets. He emphasised that the award not only reflects the number of trees planted but also the long-term care invested in ensuring their health and growth.

The City has intensified efforts to engage the community with initiatives such as the upcoming WA Tree Festival in April and Tree Month in May. In 2024, Tree Month saw over 280 trees and 1,600 shrubs planted during verge transformations, and this year's initiative will be even bigger, with a variety of tree plantings for the community to participate in throughout May.

Additionally, the City's National Tree Day event in July 2024 saw 200 volunteers planting 3,500 native plants. Since the launch of the City's Urban Forest Plan (2016-2036), more than 7,000 trees have been planted, with ongoing efforts to improve the urban tree canopy.

To achieve Tree City recognition, the City of Perth met several criteria, including demonstrating effective tree protection policies, providing dedicated funding, and celebrating tree planting efforts.
