So, #TreatYoSelf with these awesome winter shopping finds - because you're worth it!
Shopping Centres & Markets
Nothing gets rid of those winter blues like a shopping spree! There's so many great places to shop in Perth that it's a challenge to single one or two out, but you'll certainly get your shopping spree fix at the new-look Karrinyup Shopping Centre - Perth's premier shopping destination north of the river, home to Myer, David Jones, H&M, UNIQLO, MECCA, Nespresso and over 110 specialty stores. They have recently opened stage one of their major renovation and expansion, welcoming a whopping 60+ new stores - bringing the total number of stores in the Centre to 180+.
Over in the top-notch seaside getaway destination of Mandurah, the Mandurah Forum recently completed a $350 million revitalisation to become a contemporary retail, dining and shopping destination of WA's second-biggest city, home to a whopping 200 specialty stores.
Perth is also home to two fab brand outlet centres, and you don't have to travel far to find them - in fact, the Watertown Brand Outlet Centre delivers up bargains galore only a short CAT bus ride away from Perth CBD. You'll find 100+ retailers including household-name brands including local faves like Peter Alexander and Quiksilver, and internationally renowned brands like Nike and Skechers. It's not all about fashion retail either; from adorable stationery shop Smiggle to homewares retailer Bed Bath and Beyond (and beyond!). It's also a great place to grab a feed - we reckon those Gelare waffles are an iconic part of the #seeperth experience.
A bit further afield (but well worth the trip) DFO Perth near Perth Airport is the first WA branch of the super-popular national DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) chain, home to 100 more brands. We love their high-fashion focus - you'll find great deals on luxe brands like Oroton, Coach and Kate Spade New York. And don't miss warming yourself up with a hot choccie from the Lindt chocolateria!
And if you love strolling through markets looking for eclectic, bespoke finds, head to Fremantle to visit the Fremantle Markets! Founded over 120 years ago, these markets have been one of the leading tourist and shopping destinations in WA for generations, and there's always plenty to see and do any time of the year. You'll find 150+ stalls - plenty of places to find beautiful locally made gifts, unique souvenirs and artisanal products and produce, as well as market food stalls serving up tasty fare from around the world. It's a great spot to keep the kids entertained, too: pat a koala or hold a snake at the Wildlife Zoo on Fridays from 12 - 2pm, and meet the Market Fairies on Saturdays from 10 - 1 and Sundays from 11 - 2, for random acts of kindness, face painting and balloon twisting. Exciting!
Boutique Stores & Art Centres
Looking to shop outside of the box? You'll find so many talented creatives in Perth making beautiful artworks, jewellery, trinkets and more! Art centres and boutiques stores are a great place to find unique works that really appeal to you - and because it's not mass-market, you're supporting local small creative businesses and practitioners, while decorating your favourite places with something special.
Some great places to start your creative shopping journey include Fremantle Arts Centre and Mundaring Arts Centre. They're both fabulous places to meander around in their own right, with top-notch exhibitions of local artistic talent; and their on-site gift shops are full of quirky, gorgeous finds showcasing WA's best creative makers. From gorgeous jewellery to homewares and artworks, people will be asking "where did you find that?" They're a perfect souvenir of your artsy day out, too!
The Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery definitely belongs on your Swan Valley itinerary! This Aboriginal owned and operated enterprise offers cultural activities, talks, performances and bush tucker as well as beautiful artwork and hand painted objects by local Aboriginal artists; think exquisitely hand-painted glassware, woodware and ceramics. There's also bush skincare, and native plants for sale. They're currently open on weekends and Monday public holidays, so time your Swan Valley getaway accordingly to enjoy this truly special spot.
Just minutes' walk away from Perth City train station, in the heart of the Perth Cultural Centre, you'll find amazing handpicked gifts, books and artsy knick knacks galore at the gift shop within the Art Gallery of Western Australia. With a mission of helping people to discover the "Art of Shopping", they've always got something new and exciting, with items and books relating to the Arts - including Indigenous and local art and designers. And we're in love with their artsy homewares!
Kings Park is a beloved tourist attraction for so many reasons, and shopping is certainly one of them, thanks to the Aspects of Kings Park gallery shop on Fraser Avenue (near the fabulous Fraser's Restaurant). Showcasing the highest quality contemporary Australian craft and design, this unique retail outlet delivers a distinctive shopping experience bridging art and design, ecology, conservation and education, in the heart of one of Perth's most iconic locations. And it's shopping with a cause, too - all proceeds support important projects in Kings Park and Botanic Garden.
Of course, there's nothing to boost your mood like gorgeous locally-made jewellery, so if you're looking to beat those winter blues with shiny things, look no further than Costello's Jewellery and Willie Creek Pearls Elizabeth Quay. Costello's Jewellery is a third generation family jewellery retailer specialising in Australian Opals, Argyle Diamonds and South Sea Pearls, located in the heart of the shopping precinct of Perth City and known for its selection of finished jewellery and large range of loose stones. Over in the waterfront Elizabeth Quay and Barrack Square precinct, the Willie Creek Pearls showroom has one of the largest collections of pearl jewellery in Australia, as well as immersive Pearl Harvest Experiences where you can hear the history of pearling in Broome, see a pearl harvested from the oyster, learn how pearls are graded, and even taste pearl meat.
Wine & Local Produce
Tantalise your tastebuds and feed your heart, mind, belly and soul with some locally produced goodies! Perth's wineries are nothing short of fabulous at this time (or any time) of year. The Swan Valley is known as the food bowl of Perth for good reason, and it's a great place for foodies and wine lovers to explore; it’s the home of Garbin Estate Wines, Harris Organic Wines and Spirits, Nesci Estate Wine Farm, and Sandalford Wines, where you'll find astonishing diversity from cellar door to cellar door.
Perfect for your Avon Valley getaway, Coorinja Winery is just five minutes out of the charming historical township of Toodyay. Established in the 1870s, it’s one of the oldest wineries in the state, with over a hundred years of winemaking experience culminating in extraordinary ports, fortified wines and small-batch red wines.
Just outside of Rockingham, the Peel Estate Wines is a magnificent winery nestled between protected wetlands and the estate's vineyard in the middle of Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) country; as well as being an ideal spot for a day trip and a picnic, you can sample an extensive range of award winning, premium quality wines in the mezzanine tasting room overlooking the winemaking floor. Their full range of wines is available for sale seven days a week, including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel Chardonnay, Verdelho, Chenin blanc as well as sparkling wines and fortifieds.
In the mood for something sweet? Head to the Swan Valley for Mondo Nougat and the House of Honey, Meadery & The Sticky Spoon Cafe. Mondo Nougat has been producing Australia's finest nougat since 1990, using only the finest Australian grown nuts and locally sourced honey. With a range of gluten, lactose and cholesterol free products, a visit to the factory and café in the Swan Valley is the best way to discover the more than 20 varieties on offer and to enjoy the famous homemade desserts, including limited and seasonal flavours.
The House of Honey sells fabulous seasonal pure honeys; in the cooler months, these crystallise or "candy" more readily than summer honeys, for some serious mouthfeel. There's so many honeys to sample, and the shop showcases all things honey and bee related from pollen, royal jelly candles to beauty products and giftware. Don't miss the live bee display where their friendly staff will explain all about the world of bees, or relax in the cafe with their famous Devonshire tea - such a mood-booster!
Lovers of baked goods are in luck this winter too; the award-winning Pinjarra Bakery has been rolling out baked goodness for over 20 years, and they've even been voted the Best Meat Pie in Australia.
