If you're not used to checking out what's happening in winter, you're in for a treat - in recent years, Perth has further cemented its well-deserved reputation as "Australia's capital of cool" with a range of exciting events all year round. From the upcoming internationally renowned sporting events to local community festivals, you'll find a plethora of events for everyone to enjoy in Perth this winter!
The Winter Village Perth
28 May - 5 September
The Winter Village Perth in Northbridge is dishing up those cosy feels this winter. This outdoor pop-up event at the Ice Cream Factory is a magical winter wonderland that's perfect for the whole family, with ice-skating, snow showers, a pop-up bar and kitchen and of course, a magical igloo village where you can cosy up in a private igloos, decked out with comfy armchairs, soft cushions and twinkling fairy lights. The Winter Village is free to enter, open 7 days a week, and boasts a full season of events and activities to explore.
Scarborough Sunset Markets - Winter Edition
5 June - 30 October, Saturdays
The Scarborough Sunset Markets - Winter Edition returns every Saturday until the end of October, with a cosy sanctuary at Scarborough Beach of all your market favs along with a few new wintery delights. Let Perth's best food trucks and dessert connoisseurs treat you to their soul-warming eats and sweet delights. Looking to stay warm? The custom-made fire pits will be a blaze, and in true Scarborough Winter Markets style, there will be an abundance of marshmallows ready for roasting. S'more party, anyone? Beats from local DJs will provide the perfect soundtrack to your wintery Saturday afternoons.
Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes
20 June - 7 November
Enjoy a blast from the past at the WA Museum Boola Bardip in Perth City for Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes (20 June - 7 November). This is the museum's first major international exhibition, displaying one of the largest selections of Greek artefacts loaned by the British Museum with materials ranging in age from the sixth to first centuries BCE. From the sporting triumphs of the original Olympians to the conquests of Alexander the Great and the epic tales of Homer, Greek history is filled with the glorious deeds of athletes, warriors and heroes.
Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO® Bricks
27 June - 30 January
Head to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle for Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO® Bricks. A quirky, fun exhibition with a difference - it's made of LEGO® bricks! Learn the stories behind eight of the world's most fascinating shipwrecks, and admire the craftsmanship of Ryan "The Brickman" McNaught, the Southern Hemisphere's only LEGO® certified professional. From the Batavia to the Titanic and more, uncover the stories of these voyages, life aboard their ships and their watery demises.
July & August
There is nothing like going to the movies in the cooler months. The Scandinavian Film Festival, from 14 July - 4 August features films and events showcasing the best in new Nordic cinema. And, dog lovers are in for a treat with the Top Dog Film Festival on 29 August, that celebrates canine connection through a collection of heart-warming stories about dogs and their people.
Truffle Season Dining Events
It's truffle season, and two of Perth's favourite restaurants and attractions are celebrating this most prized of ingredients in a series of dining events and festivals. Fremantle Markets is bringing you their very own Truffle Extravaganza from 23 - 25 July, sponsored by Great Southern Truffles. Step inside the Shed and feast your eyes and taste buds on the space we have created for all to enjoy. Wander through The Shed and sample freshly shaved truffles, learn how to incorporate truffles into your own dishes, and just maybe, have a chance at winning a truffle of your own to take home! With added entertainment including a cooking and tasting demonstration by renowned chef, Sophie Budd, and a truffle sensory experience with Great Southern Truffles very own mycologist, all of your senses will be entertained at this event!
Roman osteria Garum at The Westin Perth has partnered with WA Good Food Guide to present a culinary experience on 29 July - Truffles Unearthed Dinner. Italian maestro Guy Grossi has curated a decadent 5-course menu that pays homage to WA's black truffles paired with Margaret River's famed Cape Mentelle wines. This winter you can also indulge in a Truffle High Tea in The Westin Perth's Haven Lounge. Showcasing the earthy delights of renowned West Australian truffles, enjoy our delectable sweet and savoury treats complete with our three tier stand to recreate the indulgence at home.
Perth by Light
3 - 24 July
Head into the City of Perth this winter and immerse yourself into an incredible festival of light, dance and culture. Perth by Light will showcase a spectacular spectrum of events and experiences you won't want to miss. Highlights include 1.8 by Janet Echelman, a stunning suspended artwork at the Supreme Court Gardens replicating the pattern created by a significant earthquake event in 2011; and step into your own private dance studio and be guided by home-town Dance Maker Mitch Harvey as you make a big-screen dance debut with a difference with We Can Dance (6 - 19 July).
9 July - 15 August
The #FREOBUILDS Build Your Own Toy Adventure Trail is back and bigger than ever. THIS IS FREMANTLE have commissioned some of Perth's top LEGO® builders to create ten unique TINY BUILDS inspired by Fremantle's incredible history and stories of convicts, shipwrecks, fishing, museums and century-old markets. The 10 TINY BUILDS will be hidden in 5 secret locations around Fremantle as part of the BUILD YOUR OWN TOWN ADVENTURE TRAIL, which takes will take you through the streets of Fremantle to spots like the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, WA Maritime Museum, WA Shipwrecks Museum, Fremantle Prison and Fremantle Markets.
Fremantle Festival: 10 Nights in Port
15 - 25 July
Fremantle's annual Fremantle Festival: 10 Nights in Port returns with a range of events from dance and music to rituals and fireside dining, with a program that will have you connecting with the wild. Farewell the day and welcome the night at Sunset Pitches; soak in an outdoor hot bath and relax in the mobile sauna with Soak & Steam; experience a visual and physical celebration of the dance history of Fremantle with Epic Dance; discover the Stories of Walyalup through the voices and visual projections of local First Nations performers, singers, musicians and visual artists, performances traversing the wild mysteries embedded in the season of Makuru at Makuru Walyalup; explore a visual arts exhibition and installation created by leading West Australian visual artists in Deep Winter, and more!
Tokyo Olympics at Brookfield Place Perth
23 July - 8 August
The world's biggest sporting event, the Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXXII Olympiad) is taking place in Tokyo this July. And while we can't travel to Japan to be at the games, you can catch all the action right here in Perth! Brookfield Place Perth has been selected as Perth's main live site, broadcasting all the Olympic events live on a giant screen as they unfold. Selected Olympians will even make an appearance at the precinct to mark the event at Brookfield Place and meet their fans and share their own Olympic journeys.
Island Jazz Festival
23 - 25 July
Fans of jazz, will not want to miss the inaugural Island Jazz Festival on Rottnest Island. The festival will showcase exciting mix of jazz and jazz fusion acts across Rottnest Island with staged and roving performances throughout the weekend. From easy listening to mesmerising, classic to playful, the event caters for jazz fans, those looking for a unique experience, and visitors to the island who may be entirely new to the world of jazz.
Sneakerland, the premier sneakers and streetwear convention, will take place at the home of the Perth Wildcats, RAC Arena! The arena will transform into a sea of colour for Sneakerland; creating a space to bring together and showcase extraordinary local brands and businesses, to push boundaries and to elevate sneaker-loving culture. There's also going to be basketball themed entertainment throughout the convention, including a three-point shooting contest with awesome prizes up for grabs!
Swan Valley Wedding Open Day
Getting hitched (or daydreaming about it)? Come and experience one of the most idyllic wedding settings WA has to offer - the picturesque Swan Valley - for the free annual Swan Valley Wedding Open Day. Venues will be showcasing their wedding facilities and settings, so grab your best girls (or boys) and feel the love! All venues will have staff on hand to provide specific information relating to their venues and menus, as well as other service providers such as transport, cakes, decorators, celebrants and more.
Winter Lights Festival at Brookfield Place
12 - 21 August
Perth's favourite light festival is back! The Winter Lights Festival at Brookfield Place will once again transform the precinct into a thrilling light show, with this year’s collection of installations, projections and entertainment, a celebration of the wonderful world of sports. Festival highlights include show stopping sporting projections by Electric Canvas, and thought-provoking light sculptures from Australian artists Zara Pasfield and Renzo B. Larriviere. The 10-night event will also feature performances ‘Roving Skaters’ and ‘Greek Olympias’ by Red Top Creations as well as 'Sprites Sports Addition Edition' and 'Sports Bubbles' by Fliptease.
14 & 15 August
The annual Avon Descent - one of WA's most iconic and longest running multisport races - is a two-day, 124km adventure river race from Northam to Bayswater with competitors using powerboats kayaks, skis or SUPs, as single, double or relay teams - including a wide selection of shorter races for diverse levels of experience and ability. And for some perfect family-friendly fun, the Avon Descent Festival Weekend includes Family Fun Day events in Northam, Belmont and Bayswater, where spectators can enjoy all the action from the river bank as well as various fun activities.
In particular, you can enjoy delicious cuisine from around the world at the annual (and free!) Toodyay International Food Festival held on the banks of the Avon River in Stirling Park & Duidgee Park on 14 August. This vantage point offers visitors, race spectators and festival-goers the perfect view of the Avon Descent. Tempt your taste buds with dozens of stalls offering an incredible range of mouth–watering international cuisine, as well as boutique beer and wine, and watch the main stage come to life with a diverse range of performances inspired by cultures from around the globe and headlining acts not to be missed. And of course, there's plenty of awesome activities for the kids too!
Its Yates Springtime at Araluen - Tulip Festival
20 August - 3 October
Araluen Botanic Park will set the scene for a stunning kaleidoscope of colour for Its Yates Springtime at Araluen - Tulip Festival. The festival showcases 150,000 tulips in bloom and 36,000 flowering bulbs within Araluen's beautiful busland landscape. Feast on delights from Chalet Healy Cafe's spring menu, young explorers can join a treasure hunt to receive a lucky drip prize and enter a colouring competition and there will be food trucks, guided walks, art classes and more!
One of the biggest rivalries in world sport is coming to Optus Stadium, when WA hosts its second Bledisloe Cup! The Bledisloe Cup action returns when the All Blacks take on the Qantas Wallabies in front of what is sure to be another sell-out crowd. For lover's of sport, this is one you won't want to miss!
Australian National Ballooning Championships
30 August - 4 September
Winter finishes on a high note with the Australian National Ballooning Championships (30 August - 4 September) in Northam. This spectacular event will see the skies of Northam awash with colourful hot air balloons, with various unique, ballooning-themed activities during the Championships including the gorgeous 'Balloon Glow' and festival, a 'History of Ballooning' display at the Northam Visitor Centre and a pop-up ballooning shop on Fitzgerald Street. And if you're inspired to try hot air ballooning yourself, you're certainly in the right place for it! Northam is widely considered Australia's premier ballooning destination, and you can enjoy guided hot air ballooning tours with Liberty Balloon Flights and Windward Balloon Adventures. Windward ho!
