Put on your winter woolies and find out why Perth is the place to be this winter.

With the cooler weather setting in, winter is the perfect season for cosying up to a heater and sipping hot choccy - but with Perth's mild Mediterranean climate, there's still plenty to see and do, and fun to be had outdoors! So why not put on your winter woolies and find out why Perth is the place to be this winter (and every winter, for that matter!).

Chillaxin' in the chill

Even if you're in the mood for rugging up, that doesn't mean you have to turn into a hermit, switch on Netflix for three months year and miss out on all the fun! Hygge-seekers (a Danish concept of coziness and contentment) can find their minds, spirits and stomachs warmed in cosy little spots all over Perth.

You'll find glowing fireplaces and delicious Modern Australian dishes at CORE Cider House in the Perth Hills, belly-warming Indian fare at the gorgeously-appointed Chakra Restaurant in Inglewood, and a plethora of awesome coffee spots so numerous that we’ve got a dedicated lists right over here.

Mayfair Lane Pub & Dining Room, West Perth

And if you're in the mood for some serious comfort food, you're in luck - Mayfair Lane Pub & Dining Room's British pub-inspired fare includes a pie of the day that'll have you salivating. So peel yourself off the sofa and organise that catch-up with a friend - you'll be glad you did!

If you've eaten your fill but the night is young and you're still looking for more cosy, you're also in luck - Perth boasts a fantastic bar scene! We've got a list of Perth City Bars and Pubs for your perusal. Some that really stand out as cosy and perfect for winter are Bar Lafayette in Brookfield Place, which oozes old-world charm; Long Chim in The State Buildings, with its delish Thai dishes and decor that feels like you’ve stepped out of Perth and straight into Bangkok; and the funky Mexican basement bar Caballitos (Little Horse) on Queen Street, where tequila is considered a way of life.

The romance of winter

Winter is a perfect time to cuddle up with someone special, so if you and your beloved are looking for ways to celebrate your love, you're in luck! Whether it's a first date or a thousandth, a proposal or a kid-free night, Perth's got you covered. Winter is for lovers, so share your affections, Perth-style!

Wining and dining is a great way to say "I love you", and Perth's reputation for world-class gourmet cuisine is well-deserved. Petition Kitchen in the stunning State Buildings offers mouthwatering fare that's perfect to share including a special Winter Afternoon Tea, while Balthazar Restaurant is renowned for its delish dishes and stunning views overlooking Elizabeth Quay and the Swan River. Andaluz Bar and Tapas is a cosy little spot to enjoy some tasty bites together, and if you're in the mood for Italian, you can't go wrong on the Fremantle Gusto Italiano Trail. A bit further afield, Mandoon Estate is perfect for a fine-dining date, as well as a great place to stay the night for a romantic adventure exploring the Swan Valley - click here to see more accommodation options in Fremantle.

Next, for something a little bit different and very memorable, The Bell Tower has a romantic package that's part of a long-standing tradition for lovers which originated at the Great Wall of China and can now be found in many romantic spots around the world. You may have walked past the tower and noticed padlocks galore - these are actually "love locks", which will be personalised and dated for you and your loved one, and linked together with a chain to signify your bond. So sweet!

The wonders of nature

With some of the mildest winter days in Australia, you're not limited to exploring well-heated indoor venues - you can get out and explore! Winter in Perth and surrounds means full rivers, rushing waterfalls, and national parks enveloped in green. During the cooler months, these spots tend to be quieter - but with warm clothes, walking trails are just as interesting and inviting year-round. Besides, it's nice to get out of the summer heat anyway - you can run without working up a sweat!

Head to the Swan Valley for an abundance of walking trails to explore - Bells Rapids and Noble Falls are particularly stunning in winter. The Reabold Hill Summit Walk in Floreat is a spectacular walk to the highest natural point on the Swan Coastal Plain, offering sweeping views of the rugged coastline, Perth City and beyond to the Darling Scarp. In Toodyay, the Bilya Walk Track follows the Avon River from Duigee Park to Nardie Cemetery through a diverse range of habitats. #winterfitnessgoals.

Some other fave winter walks include Lesmurdie Falls and Hovea Falls in the Perth Hills including nearby Bibbulmun Track beginning in KalamundaKings Park just a stone's throw from Perth CBD; and a leisurely walk along the Swan River at Riverside Drive from Elizabeth Quay to Point Fraser in East Perth. If you want to explore the Swan River further, you can jump on a bike and follow one of the recently developed cycle trails.

A little further north, the 1,500-hectare Yellagonga Regional Park spans the Cities of Joondalup and Wanneroo, and is full of heritage, birdlife and lush greenery. While you're in the area, stop by the Wanneroo Botanic Gardens for mini golf, beautiful gardens, tasty fare and great fun.

Or head south to The Peel Region to enjoy the stunning Lane Poole Reserve. The largest national park within the northern jarrah forest, it boasts bush walks galore (including multi-day treks if you're feeling like a challenge), and 500-odd species of native plants. Visitors can also see a wide variety of fauna - from Western grey kangaroos to Western brush wallabies, and even quokkas and echidnas!

Family-friendly winter fun

Winter in Perth is great for the whole family! Check out our family fun in Perth feature for more ideas than the kids can shake that stick they found at. Scitech has just reopened (to the joy of budding scientists of all ages); Whiteman Park has a range of exciting activities with the vintage train rides, the almost-magical Children's Forest and koala cuddles and kangaroos chilling in the chill at Caversham Wildlife Park; and a bit further afield, Bilya Koort Boodja in Northam is a cultural centre offering engaging activities that educate children and adults alike about Aboriginal culture - well worth the trip!

Finally, the ultimate winter activity - nothing says living your best winter like a hot chocolate! Perth's coffee is to die for, so it makes sense that you can find some pretty fantastic hot chocolate here in winter. Some of our favourites are the hot chocolates (and generally all the chocolates!) at Whistler's Chocolate Co and the Margaret River Chocolate Company (both in the Swan Valley), and Koko Black and Sue Lewis Chocolatier in Perth CBD. You'll also find San Churros in many locations across Perth - their Spanish hot chocolate is rich, luxe and as chocolatey as it gets!

So whether you're wining and dining with someone special, exploring natural winter wonders, getting a feed or getting your groove on, Perth in winter is the hottest spot around. Don't let the cooler weather get you down - everything you're looking for is just waiting for you! Explore all our Winter destinations with our Best of Perth Blog.
